Favourite albums of 2008

#1 Goldfrapp – Seventh Tree
Simply perfect: beautiful, haunting, catchy, soulful, and great live.

#2 Coldplay – Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends
Probably their best record to date. Very inspired, showing a more profound and darker sound. All the songs on this record are amazing.

#3 The Kooks – Konk
This album got me so easily and so fast thanks to its catchy songs and overall consistence.

#4 The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age Of The Understatement
Amazing collaboration from Alex Turner and Miles Kane, very deep and mature sound. Some of the songs are instant classics

#5 Alphabeat – This Is Alphabeat
Fresh, really danceable, incredibly catchy and fun: this is Alphabeat

#6 The Republic Tigers – Keep Color
I just can’t get enough of this record… can you?

#7 The Virgins – The Virgins
A great first album, perfect in every situation, and full of catchy tunes: a must-have!

#8 Duffy – Rockferry
This album is just beautiful: great songs, fantastic voice, and it’s a real grower. A star is born!

#9 Sugababes – Catfights and Spotlights
Despite bad single choices, this record has a huge potential. It’s really classy and soulful. But they didn’t forget their pop roots, thank God.

#10/1 Travis – Ode To J Smith
A return in top form, unfortunately who knows it?
#10/2 MGMT – Oracular Spectacular
A very solid first album, with 3 instant classics on it.
#10/3 Julien Doré – Ersatz
Classy, funny, musically varied and well thought. A winner.
#10/4 Ladyhawke – Ladyhawke
A very promising and exciting first album which deserves major success in 2009.

Special note on Madonna’s Hard Candy:
I’m still not sure what to think about this record, 8 months after its release. Is it generally awful or amazing? Some songs (Incredible, Heartbeat, Spanish Lesson) are so bad that a new word should be invented for them. Fortunately 4 fantastic pop songs (Beat Goes On, She’s Not Me, Miles Away, Give It 2 Me) save the lot. The rest (Candy Shop, 4 Minutes, Dance Tonight, Devil, Voices) is listenable, though it never reaches Madonna-heights.

Other albums I played a lot in 2008 : Amadou & Mariam – Welcome To Mali, Tim Hanauer – Time For Change, The Fratellis – Here We Stand, Razorlight – Sleepway Fire, Take That – The Circus, Sharleen Spiteri – Melody, Lenny Kravitz – It Is Time For A Love Revolution, Girls Aloud – Out Of Control, Britney Spears – Circus, Kings Of Leon – Only By The Night
